Card Statistics

Bill Terry is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the New York Giants in a long throwing follow-through, his body leaning across the field as the motion carries him forward. The pinstriped uniform, striped stockings, and pale cap are set against a green field and a richly colored orange-red sky, giving the card a warm, almost sunset atmosphere. The pose is more active than a conventional first-base portrait and gives the image a strong sense of movement without losing the stately character of the large T3 format.

The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models Terry’s uniform with light cream, gray, and rose washes, allowing the vertical striping to remain visible while still giving the figure volume. Stronger red and blue accents in the stockings add visual rhythm near the bottom of the composition, while the darker belt and shoes provide structure. The glowing sky is handled in broad bands of orange, rose, and violet, creating one of the more atmospheric backgrounds in this portion of the series.

Bill Terry was one of the National League’s finest hitters and first basemen of the 1920s and 1930s. He became New York’s regular first baseman in the mid-1920s and reached his peak in 1930, when he collected 254 hits and batted .401—making him the last National League player to hit .400. Terry finished his major-league career with a .341 batting average and more than 2,100 hits. He later succeeded John McGraw as manager of the Giants and led the club to the 1933 World Series championship as well as additional pennants in 1936 and 1937. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1954. (SABR)

Numbered #70, the Terry card adds another major figure to one of the deepest team groupings in the T3 checklist. Alongside Mathewson, McGraw, McGinnity, Marquard, Bresnahan, and others, Terry helps carry the New York Giants story forward from the Deadball Era into the club’s successful 1920s and 1930s years. For Giants collectors, he is especially important because he represents both an elite player and the manager who succeeded McGraw. (Helmar Brewing Co.)
