Card Statistics

Jim Thorpe is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the New York Nationals, standing at the plate in a composed batting stance with the bat held close to his body. The pose is restrained, but the broad shoulders and powerful build immediately suggest the extraordinary athlete behind the image. His pale pinstriped uniform, dark New York sleeve emblem, and vivid magenta stockings stand against a deep green field and a striking orange-violet sky, giving the card one of the more unusual color combinations in the series.

The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. Fine vertical striping defines Thorpe’s uniform, while soft cream and gray washes give the figure volume. The stronger magenta accents in the cap brim, sleeve emblem, and stockings provide an unexpected decorative rhythm, and the bat is rendered in warm brown tones that stand clearly against the lighter clothing. The distant skyline and glowing sky are handled broadly, creating atmosphere without competing with the figure.

Jim Thorpe was one of the most remarkable all-around athletes of the twentieth century. He won both the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, starred in football at Carlisle, and later became one of the early professional game’s greatest players. Baseball was another major part of his career. John McGraw signed Thorpe to the New York Giants in 1913, and he ultimately appeared in 289 major-league games with New York, Cincinnati, and Boston. Though his .252 lifetime average never matched his accomplishments in football and track, Thorpe’s presence in major-league baseball forms an important part of the extraordinary story of an athlete who competed at the highest level in several sports. 

Numbered #47, the Thorpe card brings a collecting dimension to T3 that few other subjects can match. It fits naturally within the strong New York Giants grouping, but it is equally attractive to collectors of Olympic history, early professional football, Native American athletes, and great multi-sport figures. That crossover appeal makes Thorpe one of the more unusual and broadly interesting personalities represented in the series. 

Produced in Helmar’s distinctive handcrafted tradition, the card combines original watercolor artwork with a subject whose significance reaches far beyond baseball alone.
