Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “This lad is going to be one of the greatest left-handed hitters this league has ever seen,” said manager John J. McGraw after witnessing Mel Ott’s audition in 1925. Mel has been near the top of the league in homers, RBI, and walks throughout his career. His best year was 1932 when he led the league with 38 roundtrippers, 100 walks, and a .424 on-base average. In the ’33 World Series, Mel hit .389, cracked two homers, and compiled a slugging average of .722 as the Giants bested the Senators. Mel stands 5’9” and weighs 171 pounds, throws right.
