Rube Marquard is shown with the New York Nationals at the completion of his pitching motion, his body leaning forward as his weight settles over the front leg. The red-striped uniform, black cap, and interlocking New York insignia stand out against an unusually warm backdrop of green field and orange-gold sky. The distant skyline gives the scene added depth, while the elongated full-figure pose is particularly well suited to the large, vertical proportions of the T3 format.

The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. Fine red striping follows the folds and movement of Marquard’s uniform, while transparent cream and gray washes give the figure volume without sacrificing the lightness of the medium. The dark cap, stockings, glove, and sleeve emblem provide concentrated accents. Behind him, the sky is built from broad warm washes of yellow, orange, and rose, creating an almost sunset effect that gives this card a markedly different atmosphere from many of the cooler-toned subjects in the series.

Rube Marquard became one of the best-known left-handed pitchers of the Deadball Era. After New York acquired his contract for the then-sensational price of $11,000, he initially struggled before emerging as a star under John McGraw. Marquard won 24 games in 1911 and opened the 1912 season with 19 consecutive victories, a major-league record at the time, before finishing that year with a league-leading 26 wins. He helped the Giants capture three straight National League pennants from 1911 through 1913 and later pitched for Brooklyn, Cincinnati, and Boston. Marquard finished with 201 major-league victories and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971. (Society for American Baseball Research)

Numbered #33, the Marquard card adds another major pitcher to the growing New York Giants grouping within the T3 series. Alongside Joe McGinnity and Hooks Wiltse, it gives collectors several different generations of McGraw’s pitching staffs, while Marquard’s famous 19-game winning streak and colorful career make him a strong individual collecting subject as well.

Produced in Helmar’s distinctive handcrafted tradition, the card combines original watercolor artwork, a Hall of Fame pitcher, and a deliberately vintage presentation inspired by the grand-format baseball cards of the tobacco era.
