Helmar “This Great Game” Card #62 – Chico Carrasquel (Chicago White Sox)
This Helmar card presents shortstop Chico Carrasquel in a poised batting stance, his frame turned just enough to reveal a confident grin beneath his cap. The artist captures the relaxed readiness of a player who excelled at the finer points of infield play. Behind him, the diamond glows with bold purples, greens, and oranges—colors that evoke the bright, buoyant optimism of early 1950s baseball art.
Alfonso “Chico” Carrasquel (1926–2005) broke barriers as the first Latin American-born player to appear in an All-Star Game, representing the Chicago White Sox in 1951. Known for his smooth glove, quick reflexes, and sharp baseball intellect, Carrasquel became a fan favorite on the South Side. His success opened the door for generations of Latin American talent to follow, including his countryman and nephew, Luis Aparicio.
Helmar’s “This Great Game” series celebrates baseball’s timeless icons through rich gouache portraiture and vintage-style design. Each card is printed on heavy stock with subtle toning and aged borders, evoking the texture and spirit of classic gum cards while honoring the artistry of the national pastime.
