Easter, Luke

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: They never built a ballpark that could hold a drive off the powerful bat of Luscious Luke Easter. In a career that spanned four decades, from the Great Depression to the Groovy mid-1960s, Easter belted more than 500 home runs. A left-handed power hitter with an uppercut swing, Easter debuted in the white major leagues when he was 33 years old, but that didn’t stop him from terrifying pitchers. He hit a line drive that traveled to the top of the scoreboard at the Polo Grounds in deep center, the first ball anyone had seen hit that far. After averaging 31 homers per season in the bigs, Luke played until he was 48 years old in the top minor leagues, still stinging fastballs.
