Vic Wertz

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: Most famous for a ball he hit that was caught by someone else. In the 1954 World Series, Wertz smacked a drive to deep center that soared over the head of young Willie Mays. It was destined for the Polo Grounds warning track, a sure triple. But Willie sprinted under the ball and it nestled into his outreached glove as he was running with his back to the infield. “All I was thinking about as I rounded first,” Vic said, “was standing on third.”
