Harry Heilmann is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the Detroit Tigers in a poised batting stance, bat held high as he waits on the pitch. The pale Detroit uniform and deep blue cap and stockings stand sharply against the green field, while the yellow, orange, and rose-colored sky gives the card a warm atmospheric glow. The compact pose conveys the concentration of a hitter rather than exaggerated action, an appropriate treatment for one of the most accomplished batsmen in Tigers history.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models Heilmann’s uniform with pale cream, gray, and blue washes, using deeper shadows in the folds of the shirt and trousers to give the figure volume. The blue cap, stockings, and Detroit insignia provide strong color accents, while the bat is rendered in warm brown tones. Behind the figure, the field and skyline are kept simple, allowing the broad sunset sky to supply much of the mood without competing with the player.
Harry Heilmann was one of the finest right-handed hitters of his generation and a cornerstone of the Detroit lineup throughout the 1920s. He won four American League batting championships, hitting .394 in 1921, .403 in 1923, .393 in 1925, and .398 in 1927. Heilmann finished his seventeen-year major-league career with a .342 batting average, 2,660 hits, 542 doubles, and 1,539 runs batted in. After his playing career he became a familiar voice to Detroit fans as a Tigers radio broadcaster. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1952. (Society for American Baseball Research)
Numbered #60, the Heilmann card adds another major cornerstone to the Detroit grouping within the T3 series. Together with Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford, Hughie Jennings, George Mullin, Goose Goslin, and other Tigers subjects, it helps trace several generations of Detroit baseball rather than concentrating on a single championship club.
