Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Recent stalwarts of the Giants, “Hal” Schumacher went 19-12 in 1933, and 23-19 in ’34, while “Lefty” racked up a batting average of .306 (after coming over from Brooklyn), and .316 in ’34. In the second game of the ’33 World Series, “Lefty” pinch hit and knocked in two runs, in support of pitcher Schumacher, who let up one run in a 6-1 Giants victory (though the Senators won the Series). This gave “Lefty” a lifetime 1.000 World Series batting average (1-for-1) to hang as an ornament alongside his .349 lifetime regular-season average.
