Card Statistics
Johnny Evers is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the Boston Nationals in a poised batting stance, body turned across the plate with the bat held high behind his shoulder. The deep blue uniform immediately distinguishes the card from the many pale-uniform subjects in the series, while the red trim and striped stockings provide sharp contrasting accents. Set against a broad green field and a warm yellow-orange sky, the figure has a strong silhouette and an almost theatrical clarity.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She builds the uniform from layered cobalt, ultramarine, and blue-black washes, allowing the folds and contours of the fabric to remain visible despite the dark overall tone. The red sleeve patch, piping, and stocking bands are used sparingly but effectively, while the bat introduces a warm brown vertical at the upper left. The distant fence and trees are kept subdued, leaving Evers’s stance and uniform as the dominant elements.
Johnny Evers was one of the great infielders of the Deadball Era and the middle man in the celebrated Chicago Cubs double-play combination of Tinker to Evers to Chance. A smart, intensely competitive second baseman, he helped Chicago win four National League pennants and two World Series championships before joining Boston in 1914. With the Braves, Evers became a central figure in the club’s astonishing surge from last place to the National League pennant and World Series championship. He was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player for that season and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.
Numbered #95, the Evers card is an especially strong companion to the horizontal “1914 Champion Braves” card at #89. Where that card presents the championship club as a group, this issue isolates one of the team’s most important veteran leaders. Evers also carries substantial collecting interest beyond Boston because of his Hall of Fame career with Chicago and his permanent association with one of baseball’s most famous infield combinations.
Produced in Helmar’s distinctive handcrafted tradition, the card combines original watercolor artwork, a Hall of Fame infielder, and a direct connection to both the Cubs dynasty and Boston’s celebrated 1914 championship.
