Grover Cleveland Alexander is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the Philadelphia Nationals, shown at the finish of his delivery with his throwing arm extended and the baseball still visible in his hand. The pale Phillies uniform, red cap, stockings, and large chest emblem stand out against the green field and a richly colored orange, rose, and blue sky. The composition is direct and imposing, giving Alexander the visual weight appropriate to one of the greatest pitchers of the early twentieth century.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models Alexander’s uniform with restrained cream, gray, and pale blue washes, while the red cap, chest emblem, and stockings provide the strongest accents. The glove is handled in warm brown tones, and the face is carefully defined with deeper reds and shadows. Behind him, the field and sky are simplified into broad layers of color, creating an atmospheric setting without competing with the figure.
Grover Cleveland Alexander won 373 major-league games, tying Christy Mathewson for the National League career record, and finished with a 2.56 earned-run average. He established himself immediately with Philadelphia, winning 28 games as a rookie in 1911, and reached 30 victories in three consecutive seasons from 1915 through 1917. Alexander later pitched for Chicago and St. Louis, and at age thirty-nine played a decisive role in the Cardinals’ 1926 World Series championship, including his celebrated relief appearance in Game Seven against the Yankees. Numbered #59, the Alexander card gives Philadelphia collectors one of the essential pitching subjects in the T3 checklist. His Phillies identification represents the club with which he achieved most of his greatest individual seasons, while his stature places the card naturally alongside Mathewson, Johnson, Young, Grove, and the other elite pitchers represented throughout the series.
