Ted Lyons is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the Chicago Americans in a calm standing portrait, arms folded across his chest with his glove tucked beneath one elbow. The cream White Sox uniform, blue undersleeves and cap, and large red-and-blue “S” chest emblem give the figure a strong Chicago identity. His crossed ankles and relaxed stance make the composition feel informal and self-assured, more like a veteran posing between innings than a pitcher caught in motion.
The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the pale uniform with soft cream, ochre, gray, and blue-green washes, using the deep blue sleeves and cap to frame the upper body. The chest emblem provides the strongest graphic accent, while the tan glove adds a warm counterpoint. The background is reduced to broad dark blue-gray and green fields, creating a quiet, nearly abstract setting that keeps the attention on Lyons’s upright figure.
Theodore Amar “Ted” Lyons was one of the greatest pitchers in Chicago White Sox history and spent his entire major-league career with the club. He debuted in 1923 and remained with Chicago through 1946, apart from military service during World War II. Lyons was known for exceptional control, intelligence, and durability, and he adapted his pitching style successfully as he aged.
Lyons won 260 games for the White Sox, including 22 in 1927, and threw a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox in 1926. In the later years of his career he was used primarily on Sundays, becoming so closely associated with that assignment that he acquired the nickname “Sunday Teddy.” Remarkably, at age 41 in 1942, he led the American League with a 2.10 earned-run average.
Numbered #193, the Lyons card adds one of the defining pitchers in White Sox history to the T3 checklist. The relaxed crossed-arm pose suits a player remembered for longevity, confidence, and mastery rather than overpowering theatrics, while his 260 victories and extraordinary one-club career give the subject substantial historical importance. Lyons was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
