Fleetwood Walker

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: “Fleet” Walker is a steady defender behind home plate. A star for the college teams at Oberlin and U. Michigan, he was in communication with the Boston Red Stockings to join that team, but did not. With Toledo in 1884, Fleet compiled a .263 batting average, with 70 assists behind the plate and 37 errors. His brother, Welday Walker, joined the Blue Stockings for a few games. Fleet was the object of the protests of White Sox helmsman “Cap” Anson, as Anson has strenuously objected to including Negroes in organized baseball. Anson pulls a lot of weight.
