BILL VEEK (HOF)

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Veeck lost his leg over the winter due to an old war injury, but he is still feeling the glow of his Cleveland ball club winning the World Series over Boston. Making AL MVP Boudreau his player-mgr. was the smartest thing Bill ever did. Signing Doby, the AL’s first negro, also paid big dividends to the fair-minded Veeck. Cleveland is now sitting fat and happy, after drawing a record 2.6 million fans to Municipal Stadium last year. Bill’s dad, William L. Veeck Sr., was once pres. of the Cubs.
