Billy SOUTHWORTH (HOF)

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Peripatetic “Billy” is on his fourth major league team, having suited up for the Cleveland Naps, the Pirates, and the Boston Braves. Most recently, Casey Stengel, Dave Bancroft and Bill Cunningham were sent to Beantown in exchange for Southworth and hurler Joe Oeschger. A reliable right fielder, “Billy” can also be counted on to hit right around .300, and take his share of bases on balls. In 1920, he led the NL in caught stealing, with 25, against 23 successful swipes. Perhaps he’s got honest legs. “Billy” bats left, throws right, stands 5’9” and weighs 170 lbs.
