Enos SLAUGHTER (HOF)

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: Skipper Burt Shotton hung the nickname “Country” on his outfielder the first time he heard Enos speak at Columbus in the American Association in 1937. Another manager, Eddie Dyer, was the impetus for Slaughter’s habit of running everywhere on the diamond. One day in the Sally League, Enos walked back to the dugout from his position, and Dyer hollered “Kid, are you tired? Because I can get you some help.” Ever since, “Country” has run top-speed, even to first base after drawing a walk.
