Red SCHOENDIST (HOF)

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: Was playing billiards at a pool hall when he heard over the radio about a tryout being held by the Cardinals. Red went to the tryout with a friend and after impressing St. Louis officials, received an offer to play professionally for $75 per month in the Redbirds system. His eye was injured at a Civilian Conservation Corps camp when he was a kid and as a result he learned to switch-hit so he could see the ball with each eye.
