Joe Nuxhall

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: Though he’s only 26 years old, Nuxhall has 11 professional seasons of baseball under his belt, and he’s coming off his best yet. In ‘55 he won 17 games for the Reds in a season where his manager asked him to pitch out of the bullpen between his starts. Nuxie didn’t mind, and he made 17 appearances as a reliever with a 2.27 ERA. Teammate Dick Sisler praised: “That kid’s got it in spades. He’s as quick as Curt Simmons … [and] also throws quite a curve; in fact, it’s the type which fairly explodes.
