Mueller, Don

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: What made Mueller a big league slugger capable of doing amazing things like swatting five homers in two games? Mostly it was talent and hard work, but Don also had a fantastic teacher. His dad Walter was an outfielder in the 1920s for the Pirates, and when he saw his boy struggling early in his pro career, he called on a supreme batting coach. The Sr. Mueller got tips from former teammate Paul Waner, who told young Mueller to close his front shoulder to the pitcher and narrow his stance. Don nearly won a batting title after adopting Waner’s advice, and Walter was one proud papa.
