Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: One team’s trash is another team’s treasure. Both “Rube” Marquard and “Chief” Meyers were released by the New York Giants in 1915. Picked up by the Robins, the old battery mates took their revenge, helping lead the Robins to the 1916 National League pennant. “Rube” found new life, garnering 13 wins against 6 losses and a stingy 1.58 ERA, the latter the best mark of his fine career. The “Chief” provided leadership behind the plate, catching about half of the team’s games. He threw out over 50% of attempted base thieves. He batted .247. Manager “Uncle Wilbert” Robinson is rubbing his hands in excitement at the upcoming season.
