Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: One of the greatest players of the 19th Century, Bill hit over .319 and stole more than 40 bases in six of his seven seasons. His .389 batting average in 1895 remains a club record. Still in his prime at age 28, he announced his retirement and intent to marry just before the end of the 1899 season. His future father-in-law is a San Francisco real estate tycoon who refused to let Bill play ball. Bill has helped to establish a European baseball league. He stands 6’1” and weighs 190 pounds. He throws and bats from the right side.
