Buck Lai

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Many are insisting that “Buck” Lai is professional baseball’s first Chinese ballplayer. Of Chinese parentage, “Buck” was born and reared in Hawaii. In 1916, “Buck” toured with a team sporting the moniker, The Hawaiian Chinese University Nine, so maybe that’s where all the confusion originated. Solid at all infield positions, and an astute student of the game, last year “Buck” played 3rd base for Bridgeport in the Eastern League, hitting .293, and topping the league in stolen bases. He has high hopes for 1919.One of eleven children, “Buck” stands 5’10”, bats and fields right.
