Len Koenecke

Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: For the Dodgers in 1934, “Len” hit a promising .320, but showed up the following spring out of shape. He was hitting .283 on September 16, when, before a game in St. Louis, manager Casey Stengel informed “Len” that his season was over. That night, “Len” began to drink heavily before boarding a plane to take him east. In the skies over Ontario, he became wild, and perhaps suicidal, starting a fight, and attempting to grab the controls of the plane. Hoisting a fire extinguisher, the pilot bashed “Len’s” skull. On the ground, authorities pronounced “Len” dead. “Len” batted left and threw right. He stood 5’11”
