Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Any Japanese ball fan will bow before these two giants of the game. Tetsuharu “God of Batting” Kawakami struck out only six times during the 1951 season while leading the league with a .347 average. He led again in 1953, hitting .347, and again last season, 1955, with a .338 clip. Shigeru Chiba is the stalwart second baseman for the Giants. In 1949 he hit .307, scored 121 runs, and walked 76 times. In the 1951 Japan Series he hit .412 and boasted a .647 slugging average to help propel the Giants to their first title.
