Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Syl was born in Portland, Oregon, on December 31st of 1900. In 1920 he began his career in Vancouver, with the Beavers, where he went 11-12. That year he finished the season with the Portland Beaver club, going 1-4. The following year he went 12-26 with Portland and that somehow got him a promotion to Detroit in 1922. The Tigers must have known something other teams didn’t, because he had a successful 19-10 record in ‘22-’23. Last season, 1929, he turned in a nice 13-7 record for the Cards. He also had three saves while pitching his highest number of innings to date, 182.1.
