Monte IRVIN

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: When Monte Irvin was finally given a chance to play a full season in the major leagues he batted .312, hit 24 home runs, led the league with 124 RBIs, and finished third in NL MVP voting. He was 32 years old when he did that for the Giants, but he had been playing professional baseball at a high level since he was 18. His years spent in the Negro Leagues didn’t obscure his greatness however, and Monte was respected by his peers, including a young Willie Mays, who idolized his teammate.
