John Lucius Hampton

Biography

John "Lucius" Hampton was a Negro Leagues pitcher who played for the Washington Potomacs during the 1924 season in the Eastern Colored League, appearing in both pitching and batting roles for the team based in Washington, D.C. (which later relocated and became the Wilmington Potomacs in 1925). In limited documented action, he compiled a 6-8 win-loss record with a 4.89 ERA over 15 games on the mound, while also contributing offensively by batting .294 with 4 home runs across 29 games, showcasing his dual-threat potential despite the era's incomplete statistical records. The Potomacs struggled that year with a poor overall record (around 21-38 in league play under manager Ben Taylor), finishing near the bottom of the Eastern Colored League amid challenges common to many Negro League teams of the time. Hampton's time with the club represents one of the lesser-known chapters in Negro Leagues history, where players like him helped sustain the sport for Black athletes before integration in the majors.
