Biography

The short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Five days before last year’s inaugural so-called “All-Star” game played at Comiskey Park, honorary mgrs. John McGraw and Connie Mack announced that the starting pitchers would be baseball’s two greatest left-handers: Carl Hubbell and Lefty Grove. Both mgrs. changed their minds and started other pitchers, but Hub and Lefty did pitch in the game, won 4-2 by the AL. Hubbell pitched the last 2 frames for the NL; Grove the final 3 for the AL. Neither allowed a run.
