Garagiola, Joe

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: When young Larry Berra received the nickname “Yogi,” Joe Garagiola was there. When Stan Musial was winning batting titles year after year, Garagiola was there. When Country Slaughter made his “mad dash” to score a pivotal run in the 1946 Series, Joe was there too. Like a talisman, the stocky catcher was on some of baseball’s greatest teams and a frequent witness to history in a nine-year career in the senior circuit. His gentle humor and steady dependability made Joe as easy to throw to, as pitcher Mort Cooper said, “as the barn wall.”
