Furillo, Carl

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: The right field wall at cozy Ebbets Field was adorned with billboards, and when a baseball would be hit against it, the resulting sound was a dull “THUD” followed by the ball sadly bounding back toward the playing field. Carl Furillo was the master of playing those strange caroms, and with a right arm that produced thunderbolts, he often gunned down runners to quall enemy rallies. “The Reading Rifle” was more than just a defensive star, he completed his career just one hit shy of a .300 average.
