Fred Fitzsimmons

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Now a coach with the New York Giants, “Fat Freddie” won 217 games against 146 losses in his career for the Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers. Despite his nickname, Freddy was an aggressive and successful fielder, setting the major league record for a pitcher with 79 double plays in his career. Last year, as a coach with the Braves, “Fat Freddy” approached Giants skipper Leo Durocher about working for the Giants. When Freddy jumped to the Giants, the Braves protested that Durocher had “tampered” with Freddy. Commissioner Chandler agreed with the Braves, and fined Durocher and Freddy each $500.
