Roy Face

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: None other than Warren Spahn, grandad of National League hurlers, says of Elry Face: “He has the guts of a lion.” A little man on the mound, Face strikes fear in batters when he enters a contest with the outcome uncertain. His trademark pitch, the forkball, was taught to him by Joe Page, who wound down his career tossing a few innings from the bullpen for the Buccos. Page showed Face how to grip the ball, how to throw it, and when to use it. Elroy has done the rest, making himself a giant (although not in actual inches) among league relievers.
