Erskine, Carl

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: Erskine never led the league in K’s and he only made the All-Star team once, but the Hoosier right-hander had several big days on the mound. He tossed a pair of no-hitters for the Dodgers, both of them matinee shows at Ebbets Field, and four years apart in the early 1950s. The skinny pitcher must have loved Flatbush, because it was at Ebbets Field in Game Three of the 1953 World Series that “Oisk” fanned a record 14 Yankee batters in a victory gem. How tough was he? Erskine performed that last feat on one days rest.
