Ray DANDRIDGE (HOF)

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar-R319 card back: Ray was born August 31, 1913, in Richmond, Virginia. His first appearance in the Negro Leagues was with Jim Taylor’s powerful Detroit Stars in 1933. Unfortunately the team was having money troubles and “Squatty” was sent to the Elite Giants in Nashville for a spell. The next season he moved on to the Newark Dodgers where he began to gain wide attention due to his fine fielding. It is claimed that he may be a better fielder than even the celebrated Pie Traynor. He moved across town to the Newark Eagles for three seasons before signing with Caracas. There he helped lead the team to the Venezuelan championship.
