Conners, Chuck

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: When Chuck Connors learned his contract had been purchased by the Cubs he was initially disappointed. “I didn’t want to go,” Chuck said. Why wouldn’t a young ballplayer jump at the chance to play in the big leagues? Well, Chuck was playing minor league ball for the Los Angeles Angels at the time, with 22 homers on his ledger. But the most important reason was Hollywood. Connors had his eyes set on a career in front of the camera, not on a ballfield. After a tough few months trying to adjust to the slants of big league pitching, Chuck was shipped back to LA, and within a couple years he was in his most famous role, as Lucas McCain in “The Rifleman.”
