Ewell Blackwell

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: A tall, gaunt, long-necked Californian with a sweeping, sidearm delivery that puzzles batters. Blackwell nearly matched Johnny Vander Meer’s feat of two consecutive no-hitters, when he fired a no-no against the Braves in 1947 and held the Dodgers hitless until the ninth inning in his next start. Both times, “The Whip” had his sidearm fastball on target and the gems came during a 16-game winning streak for the 6-foot-6 righthander.
