Gus Bell

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: The Reds are happy to get left-handed pop from the bat of Gus Bell, an All-Star center fielder. In 1955 he topped the 100 RBI mark for the third year in a row, often sending home little Johnny Temple or Smoky Burgess with a Cincinnati tally. Bell was born just across the river from The Queen City in Louisville, where he earned the nickname “Gus” because of his resemblance to former big league catcher Gus Mancuso.
