Ed Bailey

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: Teammates should call Bailey “star” for his lofty home run totals (48 for the Reds in 1956-57), but they prefer “Gar,” which is short for his given anime “Edgar.” Behind the plate, “Gar” is gabby and cocky, known for his habit of chattering at opposing hitters. For years he’s carried a running conversation with Willie Mays of the Giants, egging The Say Hey Kid to steal a base if he reached first. In his first seven seasons, baserunners stole 98 bags off Ed, but he threw them out 99 times.
