Ernie BANKS (HOF)

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: Didn’t play his first game of organized baseball until he was 17 years old. Five years later, Mr. Banks was playing shortstop for the Cubs. Plays the deepest shortstop in the league, since his strong throwing arm allows Ernie to get the baseball to first in time. One of ten children from the Banks family of Dallas, Ernie played with younger brother Benjamin with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League, where he was spotted by Chicago scouts playing the infield and smacking home runs.
