Sandy Amoros

Biography

From the "This Great Game" card back: He nearly didn’t make it. That was what Amoros told reporters after Game 7 of the ‘55 Series, when he made an astounding catch that saved the game for Brooklyn. Amoros was tucked close to center field to cut off the gaps at Yankee Stadium when a drive was sent sailing toward the left field line. Off with the crack of the bat, Sandy galloped to the corner and stuck out his glove to gather in the baseball. The play halted a Yankee rally and resulted in a double play. From there, Johnny Podres cruised to a shutout win, and Dodgers fans rejoiced in large part thanks to the Amoros catch.
