Richie ASHBURN

Biography

A short bio from the Helmar “This Great Game” card back: When Richie emerged on the scene in the National League he came in flashing an exciting style of play. He’s known as the best purveyor of the belly slide since Frankie Frisch, and his speed on the bases ignites the Philly offense. The first position Richie played as a boy was catcher, because none of the other neighborhood kids would dare get behind the plate. His older brother Bobby was a talented player too, until a car accident took away his chance at a pro career. Both the Indians and the Cubs tried to sign young Richie, but the league office ruled they tampered with the amateur, and he was set free, allowing the Phils to land their future center field star.
