Wally Schang is presented in Helmar’s T3 series with the New York Americans in a low catcher’s crouch, his mitt held open in front of him and his throwing hand raised near his face as though preparing to receive or return the ball. The cream uniform, blue cap and stockings, and large “NEW YORK” lettering give the figure a clear club identity, while the broad brown mitt becomes the dominant object in the composition. The pose is compact and functional, emphasizing Schang’s primary role behind the plate rather than presenting him as a hitter.

The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She models the pale uniform with warm cream, gray, and soft blue washes, placing stronger shadows beneath the arms, around the waist, and through the folds of the crouched trousers. The deep blue cap and stockings provide concentrated color accents, while the mitt is rendered with layered browns that emphasize its heavy, early catcher’s-glove construction. The green field and orange-yellow sky are handled broadly and simply, keeping attention on the figure.

Walter Henry “Wally” Schang was one of the leading catchers of his generation and one of the best offensive catchers of the early twentieth century. A switch-hitter with an excellent eye at the plate, he reached the major leagues with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1913 and quickly became part of a championship club. Schang later played for Boston, New York, St. Louis, and Detroit, combining strong on-base ability with dependable work behind the plate.

Schang joined the New York Yankees in 1921 and was the club’s primary catcher during its first great championship period. He appeared with New York in three consecutive World Series from 1921 through 1923 and helped the Yankees win the first World Series championship in franchise history in 1923. He was especially valuable offensively for a catcher of his era, finishing his major-league career with a .284 batting average and an on-base percentage above .390.

Numbered #130, the Schang card adds another important member of the Yankees’ early championship clubs to the T3 checklist. His long career, switch-hitting ability, and appearances in multiple World Series with Philadelphia, Boston, and New York make him one of the more accomplished catchers represented in the series.
