This commanding image from the Helmar T3 series pays tribute to Negro Leagues star
Andy Cooper of the Detroit Stars. Artist Natali Valiukevich’s painting captures the lefthanded
pitcher in a moment of composed strength, hands clasped around the ball
beneath a sky of lavender and gold. The elegant vertical composition, with its soft
landscape tones and subtle light, conveys both dignity and quiet power. Valiukevich’s
advanced watercolor work highlights the texture of Cooper’s striped uniform and the presence of
a man whose talent helped define an era.
Andy Cooper was one of the great pitchers and later managers of Negro League
baseball. A dependable southpaw, he starred for the Detroit Stars throughout the
1920s and later for the Kansas City Monarchs. Known for his control and endurance,
he won well over 100 league games and twice led his teams to championship series.
After his playing days, Cooper managed the Monarchs to multiple pennants, further
cementing his legacy as a leader on and off the field. He was elected to the Baseball
Hall of Fame in 2006.
